Do you like to knit? Then your help is needed to knit or crochet a baby cap that may help save a little life!

The Oklahoma Department of Health (OSDH) is just one of 15 state organizations participating in the “Click for Babies” campaign, which is designed to raise awareness about the “Period of Purple Crying,” a normal time in an infant’s life — usually between two weeks of age and four months — when they are more likely to cry excessively or exhibit signs of “colic.” This is sadly when most cases of shaken baby syndrome occur, the Health Department says.

The Click campaign (the name comes from the clicking sound knitters make with their needles) provides purple baby caps to newborn babies as a visual reminder for parents that PURPLE crying, while frustrating, is normal and will pass.

The OSDH is looking to distribute 7,650 caps to participating Oklahoma hospitals by December. Anyone interested in volunteering can log onto the OSDH website.

The Details
Caps must be newborn size and can have varying patterns as long as they contain at least 50 percent purple. They should also be free of straps or strings that could pose a choking hazard to babies. Donations will be accepted all year-long, but caps will only be included in this year’s campaign if they are received by October 1.

Volunteers can obtain patterns for caps and get campaign guidelines at clickcampaign.health.ok.gov.

Caps can be mailed to:

Oklahoma State Department of Health
ATTN: Maternal and Child Health
1000 N.E. 10th St.
Oklahoma City, Ok 73117-1299

You don’t have to live in Oklahoma to participate, but if you want to find out if your state has a similar program, check out the Click for Babies website.
